class="wp-block-paragraph">She shook her head.

“That wasn’t me.”

Eli’s eyes widened.

Caleb raised both hands.

“I know better than to interfere with Santa.”

Eli hugged the card to his chest.

Megan sat beside him.

Caleb looked at the two of them.

Then at the uneven tree.

Then at the scratched dining table visible through the doorway.

Then at Eli’s family drawing resting on the shelf.

A year earlier, Caleb had believed he possessed everything a successful man was supposed to want.

A thriving company.

A beautiful apartment.

Money.

Freedom.

Control.

He had been wrong about one word.

He had freedom from needing people.

What he didn’t have was freedom to belong to them.

That had frightened him.

Because belonging meant showing up.

It meant keeping promises when work was busy.

It meant saying sorry when you failed.

It meant letting a child scratch your expensive table.

It meant accepting that sometimes another person might rearrange your schedule, your habits, your priorities, and even the perfectly spaced ornaments on your Christmas tree.

It meant being known.

Not as a founder.

Not as a boss.

Not as the man with the downtown apartment.

Just Caleb.

The man who was terrible at building bookshelves.

The man who occasionally burned pancakes.

The man who still checked his phone too much during dinner.

The man Eli expected to show up on Fridays.

The man Megan trusted enough to tell the truth to when he was becoming distant again.

A year earlier, a little boy had asked Caleb one simple question.

Can you tell Santa we moved?

Caleb had thought he was helping a child find Christmas.

Instead, the question had found something in him.

A part that had been buried under deadlines, ambition, caution, and years of carefully managed loneliness.

Caleb watched Eli spread his crayons across the floor.

“Mr. Caleb?”

“Yeah?”

“Can you help me draw a dinosaur?”

“I’m terrible at dinosaurs.”

“That’s okay.”

Eli slid a green crayon toward him.

“You can learn.”

Caleb picked it up.

Megan smiled from the couch.

And for the first time in a long time, Caleb didn’t reach for his phone.

He sat on the floor.

He drew the worst dinosaur anybody had ever seen.

Eli laughed.

Megan laughed.

Caleb laughed too.

Outside that apartment, life was still complicated.

Jobs could disappear.

Plans could change.

People could be disappointed.

Nothing about the past year had taught Caleb that good people were protected from difficult days.

It had taught him something smaller.

Something more useful.

A hard day did not always have to be carried alone.

Sometimes the next chapter began with a job interview.

Sometimes with a borrowed apartment.

Sometimes with a late pizza.

Sometimes with an ugly handmade reindeer hanging in the center of an expensive Christmas tree.

And sometimes it began on a downtown step when a four-year-old boy looked at a stranger and asked him to make sure Santa knew the family had moved.

Caleb never did get Santa’s number.

But every Christmas after that, whenever Eli told the story, Caleb let him believe he was still working on it.

“We’re fine, thank you.” The
