These special creatures go to great lengths for the well-being of their children, no matter how old they get. Unfortunately, their love is not always returned with the same extend and the sacrifice they make is not always appreciated enough, and that’s the sad reality many mothers experience.

I guess I ended up being one of those mothers who learned the hard way that loving your child unconditionally means gping through hell.

My entire life, I’ve done everything possible not to let Jason know how much it sucks to live in poverty like I did. His father was killed in a car crash when he was just three. I still recall the day I got the news as if it was yesterday. One moment we argued about the leaking faucet in the kitchen, and the next, a police officer was standing at my front door, telling me my husband was gone.

My world collapsed, but I had Jason to take care of, and I needed to be strong for him and never let his father’s tragic passing stay on the way of the future we’ve always imagined for him.

I worked like crazy my entire life. In the morning, I worked in the bakery, then going home to take care of him before cleaning all those offices until late in the night. I made sure Jason had everything the rest of the kids at school had; braces, a lap top, and a college tuition.

When he graduated, he hugged me in front of everyone and told me we did it.

After all, Jason turned out to be a great kid. He married Emily, a sweet girl I liked, and the two moved to a small apartment in Bellford and saved every penny because the real estate market had gone totally crazy.

Yet lately, Jason cast his eyes around my place. He kept asking me if my house had ever been appraised or if I really used all three rooms upstairs. Nothing seemed odd to me because he was my son, after all! Why on earth would I need to watch my back against him?

Then, one Tuesday afternoon, he showed up on the porch with a duffel bag and a soaking-wet smile. For a second, I actually thought he just wanted to hang out. We made some grilled cheese, laughed about old times, like how he used to glue his own fingers together with Elmer’s glue for school projects, and everything felt normal.

Then he walked over to the window, stared out at the apple tree his dad had planted, and dropped the hammer. He told me straight out that the house was too big for just me, that I needed to pack up and move into some assisted living facility, and that he was going to sell the place to put a down payment on a house for him and Emily.

I wasn’t even able to process his words. Never in a million years would I expect from him to say something like that. I was so shocked that I said, “Okay.”

The next day, Mrs. Alvarez drove me over to a short-term stay at a senior community. But before we checked in, I had her mail a quick note to Emily, letting her know that Jason’s plan to use my house for their down payment was entirely his own idea and that I hadn’t offered anything like that in the first place. I don’t know why, but deep down, my gut was telling me Emily wasn’t aware of the situation.

Three days later, my phone rang right in the middle of breakfast. It was Jason, screaming so loud into the receiver that the nurses at the front desk looked right over at my room, “How could you do this to me?” Turns out, Emily got my letter, realized Jason had lied straight to her face, and immediately packed up and left for her sister’s place. He was completely losing his mind because he had a real estate photographer coming over that very afternoon to take listing pictures.

Mrs. Alvarez packed me right back into her car and brought me home. When we pulled up, Emily was waiting in her car to see how it all played out. I walked inside and saw the place was a total disaster. The furniture was shoved against the walls, and there was fresh white paint slapped over my blue hallway. Also, there were these cardboard boxes labeled “DONATE.” When I took a closer look, I noticed all of my books were inside.

Before Jason could feed the real estate agent some excuse, I walked in, flashed my key, and told the agent the house wasn’t for sale. The agent left immediately.

Emily was watching from the doorway, and I just told Jason to put everything in it’s place. Sweating through his shirt, he had to haul the donation boxes back upstairs, scrub the paint, put the furniture back, and return Daniel’s tools to the workshop.

Exhausted, he finally admitted that his obsession with owning a house by thirty-five made him stop seeing my home as his mother’s house and start seeing it as an asset.

And sure enough, Jason didn’t just walk away. He started showing up every single Sunday. I handed him a list of chores: patching holes, repainting the hallway, fixing floor scratches. He did every single one without a word of complaint. Gradually, those hours of hard labor turned into real conversations where he finally learned how to listen instead of just chasing goals.

I kept my house, and last summer, I rented out an upstairs bedroom to Priya, a nursing student.

Jason eventually managed to save up for a down payment, and he and Emily got back together. I use the rent Priya pays to cover half of Jason’s new mortgage. He’s working two jobs now, and he finally knows that owning a place takes real sacrifice, not shipping your mother off to a nursing home and selling her house out from under her.

Please SHARE this article with your family and friends on Facebook.

Bored Daddy

Love and Peace

Mothers!
