I froze when she stopped speaking.
“My husband what?” I asked softly.
The woman looked around the bank nervously before whispering, “We saw on the news that your husband had been arrested for fraud. They said he stole money from elderly people. We didn’t know if it was true, but we were scared. So… we disappeared.”
I stared at her, shocked.
“My husband was never arrested,” I said. “His brother was. They just had the same name.”
Her face turned white. Tears filled her eyes instantly.
“Oh my God,” she whispered. “We ruined everything over a misunderstanding.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke. Three years of silence stood between us.
Then she suddenly hugged me tightly.
“We missed you both so much,” she cried.
That evening, the four of us sat together again at a small restaurant, older and wiser. We laughed, cried, and talked for hours.
